Upper Eastside Mixed-use Development & DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton, Brickfield Road, Woodstock
We were the principal Architects and Interior designers of the old existing 5 Storey “Bonwit Clothing Factory” building.
The Development itself offers over 14 000 sqm of prime Commercial and Retail space and 124 Residential Apartments. A complete transformation of this existing building that was originally designed by “Uitenbooghart “, we were mindful of keeping the old nuances of the period and recycling as much of the existing finishes and furnishings as possible, all integrated into a new “Contemporary Industrial” feel.
The addition of 5th Floor double volume apartments to the existing building completed the development – sensitively designed not to overpower an already beautiful structure.
The Second Phase of Upper Eastside, which we completed in 2010, consists of a 22000 m² of mix use space. DoubleTree by Hilton Cape Town Upper Eastside Hotel, which is a 183 roomed “bespoke” hotel with a 450 seated conference venue in the East Block, is the first Double Tree hotel In Africa. The West Block consist of 158 Residential apartments.
The common Atrium – Internal Plaza, connects the 2 phases and forms the “heart” of the development. An area designed to link and transform into a multi-function and support venue. The added external amphitheatre can be incorporated into the mix – giving the venue a multi-dimensional experience.
Designed with an Industrial “Chic” feel – the development was one of the first Full Mixed-Use Schemes in Woodstock and has become a spring board for further rejuvenation to many parts of the Urban Area.
The DoubleTree by Hilton Cape Town Hotel was recently awarded a 4 STAR Green Building Rating for an existing building.
